Tragedy as $ FUTA Students Killed and 11 Injured in Auto Crash During a Religious Trip
The spokesman of the Ondo police command in Ondo, Femi Joseph, has confirmed that four students of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, died in a road accident on the Akure-Ilesha expressway in Ifedore local government area of Ondo state on Saturday.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the accident involved a Hiace bus conveying the students and a motorcycle. At least 15 students were in the bus when the accident happened, and that 11 others sustained various degrees of injuries.
Femi who attributed the incident to high speed, said the accident happened when the bus driver lost control while trying to avoid the motorcycle that suddenly appeared on the highway. The bus somersaulted several times after trying to manoeuvre its way. The students were returning from Ibadan after attending a religious programme.
He further confirmed that the remains of the students were deposited at the Ondo State Specialist Hospital, Akure, where those injured were hospitalised. “The accident happened when the bus’ driver lost control while trying to avoid the motorcycle that suddenly appeared on the highway.
“The bus somersaulted several times after trying to manoeuvre its way,” he said, adding that policemen and marshals of the Federal Road Safety Commission were at the scene to assist the deceased and those injured.
Segun Oladele, president of the FUTA chapter of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), who also confirmed the deaths, said that those injured were responding to treatment.
The Public Relations Officer of the University, Olu Adegbenro, said the students were on a private religious trip when the accident happened. He commiserated with the families of the deceased students and their colleagues.
