Nigeria Delta Avengers: Buhari and Jonathan to Meet Face to Face
President Muhammadu Buhari and his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, may meet over recent attacks by the militant group, Niger Delta Avengers, on oil and gas installations in the Niger Delta.
A Presidency source said the former president, who hails from the region, is likely to visit the Aso Rock Villa within the week for talks with Buhari on the issue.
The Niger Delta Avengers had claimed responsibility for attacks that reportedly resulted in a sharp drop in the nation’s oil output from 2.2m to 1.65m barrels per day.
The militants had last Thursday issued a two-week ultimatum to oil companies in the region to evacuate their staff or risk more attacks.
Meanwhile, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, yesterday visited President Muhammadu Buhari at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.
The governor arrived at the president’s office at 2.00pm and was in a 20-minute closed-door meeting with Buhari. Wike and the Chief of Staff to the President, Mallam Abba Kyari, left president’s office together without speaking to journalists.
He was believed to have visited the president in respect of the continued attacks on oil and gas pipelines in the Niger Delta region.
